Endway comes to SK

Imagine a life on the open road. Getting the opportunity to travel across the country and perform music everywhere you go. Leaving your home with a group of friends and band mates to try and make a living out of music.

The scene depicted is a reality for the musical group Endway.  The band from Boston, Massachusetts performed here at South Kingstown High School on Thursday April 7th during the lunch block, a promotional gig through a program called “High School Nation.”

“It’s something different and fun,” said SKHS teacher and student council adviser Mrs. Hathaway.

One of the original people that the promotional offer was posed to, Mrs. Hathaway accepted the opportunity to have the the band perform at the school.

Composed of five males, Endways philosophy according to band member Morgan Dorr is to “Follow yourself, do something you love, and being good at it.”

The band has performed over 200 shows throughout the past six years.

Other names that have done similar promotions early in their careers include Justin Beiber and Taylor Swift.

The student council was approached by a company called “Cantillon Entertainment” with an offer to promote Endway.

The band will be promoting their latest album titled “Colors.” On their way to New York City for a gig, Endway has opted to try and tour the nation to gain more of a following and fan base by making a stops at schools.

Though mainly a promotional opportunity, Endway looks to encourage kids to follow their dreams and do what they love.

Endway’s Morgan Dorr says he wants Endway to “Be more then a band; to be a band with a purpose.”

Betty White to host new NBC reality show

LOS ANGELES – The unstoppable Betty White is taking on reality TV with a hidden-camera show that turns senior citizens into merry pranksters.

NBC has ordered 12 episodes of “Betty White’s Off Their Rockers,” the working title for a series based on a hit Belgian program that has been produced in other European countries and South Korea.

“People have been telling me that I’m `off my rocker’ for years — now I can prove it,” White joked in a statement Thursday.

The reality show follows seven seniors who band together to play pranks on younger people, with White helping conspire to put one over on “the unsuspecting youth of America,” said NBC and Universal Media Studios executive Paul Telegdy.

White, 89, has a track record at NBC. She starred in the network’s sitcom “The Golden Girls” for seven seasons and won an Emmy last year as host of “Saturday Night Live.”

The actress also stars in the TV Land sitcom “Hot in Cleveland,” which has been renewed for a third season, and has a book, “If You Ask Me (And Of Course You Won’t),” set for release in May.

STUDENT VIEW:

Betty White has been a person of interest of mine ever since her involvement with the Snickers Commercial and the show Golden Girls.

The popular “Your playing like Betty White out there” line illistrates exactly why I will enjoy watching this woman and will love her show. The jokes she makes, and takes, just show me how this show is destine to be a popular one.

Getting to watch Betty White in the Sit-com show “Everybody Loves Raymond” is where I first got to encounter Betty White’s sense of humor. Now, Making a show about elder people playing pranks on younger kids, that’s classic.

Overall I feel that this show will take off and be a great success. Good for you Betty White, good for you.

My Overall Rating: 3.9 out of 5

Talent Show a Success in 2011

Performers in the 2011 Talent Show prepare for their acts before they take the stage.

Performers in the 2011 Talent Show prepare for their acts before they take the stage.

As the beginning of the second semester began, South Kingstown High School’s Students for Justice put on its annual talent show.
The talent show, a staple at South Kingstown High School, shows off various SK student’s talents in the course of a night filled with singing, dancing, and monologues.
While the 2010 show was a disappointment due to technical issues, 2011 showed much more promise with the addition of sound.
“I thought it went great this year,” said social studies teacher Mr. O’malley, who facilitates the talent show yearly alongside Mr. Taber. “Last year was terrible because of the sound issues, but this year we had people who knew how to use it.”
The show itself, which varied from tap dancing to animal noises, seemed to be a hit among the audience, with acts including the ever popular bands Elk, Eric Whitney and the Raccoons and ELK. Sarah Figgins also sang a song by Colbie Caillat, and Alison Vilanis sang original material as well.
“I liked the variety of acts,” said Mr. Taber. “It ran fairly smooth too, It was nice that it didn’t go to long.”
Along with bands, Alexis Robbins stole the stage with her ballet inspired showcase, and Sonny Vieng captivated the crowd with his robot-like dancing.
While the scheduling of the show ran into various issues regarding dates and times, the show ran smoothly and garnered a large audience.
Alongside the acts, the three hosts Torrey Martin, Jeremy Leclair, and Bill Matson, held the show together in between acts. O’malley added that “The hosts had it down, they were great.”
With the success of this years show, Taber and O’malley hope that the show keeps progressing in the years to come. “We thought the talent show was one of the best in recent years,” said Taber.
Students for Justice will be donating all of the proceeds from the show to the people of Haiti for the earthquake relief efforts.

Quidditch Captivates Nationwide Audience

This is it, seven people working together to achieve a common goal. Three types of balls, two of which are actively seeking you out, looking to take your head off, while another is constantly looking to evade you.  Put it all together and you have the ultimate team sport: Quidditch.

Forget football, baseball or curling, this IS the epitome of what being on a team is all about. Forget fantasy, this is real life.

Colleges across the country have adopted the game as a competitive sport, with leagues being created and matches being played between schools in the same regions. So, it only makes sense that it would make its way onto the high school sporting scene. But no, unfortunately, schools don’t seem to be so keen as to allow what many people call a “fantasy game” into their schools.

This is exactly why we need change.
First, let me explain how this exciting sport can be properly played. The two teams playing have seven players each, who have distinctly different responsibilities in order to benefit the team. Each team consists of three chasers, who carry the quaffle, and try to score points for the team. Next, there are two beaters, who hit bludgers at the opposing chasers to try to force a turnover of the quaffle. After that, each team has a keeper, who tries to defend the three goals from the opponent’s chasers, and a seeker, who has the most important job of all. His job is to actively seek for the snitch, a golden ball that ends the game and awards one hundred and fifty points to the team that the seeker who caught it plays for.

Normally, this game is played while flying on brooms in the Harry Potter series of books, but in our world, we are forced to play the game while running, and to make a few minor changes in order for the game to work.

First, the beaters carry tennis rackets and hit medium-sized foam balls at the chaser. If a chaser is hit, they must drop the quaffle, in our case a soccer ball. Finally, the snitch has been upgraded from a ball to a real person, dressed in all yellow. They are released at the start of the game, and can run anywhere in the field of play. The seekers then chase this individual around.

As you can see, the rules are very simple, and thanks to the efforts of colleges such as Harvard, Middlebury, UMASS Amherst, and Yale, the game is garnering much attention and popularity. In fact, an International Quidditch Association has come into existence, promising to “promote Quidditch as a new sport and lead outreach programs to increase athletic participation among children and young adults and bring magic to communities.” The IQA sponsors multiple tournaments and even a Quidditch World Cup, which Middlebury College won in 2010.

In addition, Alivans.com, an online ‘wizarding supply’ company advertises five different models of brooms for aspiring players.

And, although this may seem crazy, isn’t this where all new sports start out? Can you imagine being the guy that once said that basketball or football would never catch on and become mainstream sports?

Yeah. Sure. I can see he was totally right.

It would take a couple of years, yes, in order to gain approval for the sport, create divisions, and find schools who would be willing to participate in it and find funding, but that’s fine. I already have some ideas for where money would come from.
Let’s start with transportation. I think that instead of large buses, or even coach buses, every team could squeeze into a small bus. Forget two to a seat; I’m thinking five to six in a seat. That would save considerable cash. Also, does the golf team really need to head to Laurel Lane Country Club every day for practice? I can drill some holes in Hazard Field and they can go practice there. Look at that, more money saved. You get the idea.

Something has to be done, and I think the time is right to introduce a new sport to the high school scene. I know you’re with me.

Flashmobs Rising In Popularity

As the crowded lobby of Penn Station stirs throughout rush hour, there is a different feeling in the air. A certain suspense builds through the congested traffic of the famous station. As many walk by, they suddenly notice that a third of the people throughout the station have abruptly stopped moving mid stride. Those people who are still moving take notice of the others who have stopped and now appear frozen in place.

As the crowds gather to see this spectacle, the entertainers suddenly take back motion after about five continuous minutes of immobility. Many are shocked and awed to see something they have never been exposed to, a flash mob.

Flash mobs, or a group of people who perform a “spontaneous” act, have started to become more popular throughout the world. The reasoning behind flashmobs can be viewed as political or even entertaining. The new approach to protesting has seemed to bring out a new and softer way to make an even more valuable point known.

A local instance of a flashmob was the idea of “The Major Rager,” a large scale party that was generated from a simple idea by URI Student, Chris Allen. Posting the event on the social media forum Facebook.com, Allen hoped to create a party flash mob.

The act of creating a flash mob has come about from the preceding years with the evolution of social media and electronic devices. The way in which flash mobs are put together is by contacting many people, usually by text message or Facebook, and assembling a routine or an idea of what to do and how the protest will be done.

Flash mobs have become more and more common throughout the world, occurring in New York, Boston, Chicago, Paris, London, Zurich, Vancouver, and even Shanghai. The worldly known style of protesting has affected many stores, including Target and Wendy’s.

A recent flash mob protest was held in a Target superstore in Seattle. The Aim of the protesters was to demonstrate their position of a political donation from Target. The people felt the need to boycott Target for its role in generously backing the Minnesota republican candidate Tom Emmer. Emmer, a controversial candidate in the Minnesota election, is famously noted for his opposition to gay marriage and gay rights.

The famous quote in the target flash mob’s song “Target ain’t people, so why should it be, allowed to play around with our democracy” illustrates the peoples position of the topic. The flash mob danced and sang about how they felt the donation was wrong and unfair.

Another instance of a flash mob was seen in March of 2008 when a worldwide pillow fight simultaneously took place in over 25 cities. In New York alone, over 5,000 participants took place making the worldly done pillow fight the largest international flash mob ever demonstrated.

As we continue to advance with technology, we see more and more of a flash mob mentality. With flash mobs being connected through social media forums and text messaging, we see flash mobs everyday.

Lynchinator: The Athletic King

The Overlord, seen here, has exhibited supernatural powers when attending sporting events.

The Overlord, seen here, has been known to exhibit supernatural powers when attending sporting events.

 By Andrew D. Lavallee

He is probably one of the most powerful men in the world. He dominates the field with an iron fist. And his office, code-named, “The Domain,” is hidden on the second floor by the Art wing. To many he is simply Lynch. To his subordinates he is, “The Overlord.” Ladies want to be with him, and men wish they were him.

In the morning he doesn’t go to his car, his car goes to him. And did I mention his car isn’t a car at all? It’s M-1 Abrams Tank. He once used it to crush Monty’s cruiser for taking his spot.

Below his desk is a secret button. Push it and his office turns in to the ESPN Sports Center.

Lynch possesses X-Ray vision. Whenever he glares he sees into the soul.

We all know the Gator that he cruises around in at athletic events. He never asked for it. Lynch demanded it, and the very next day it was parked in his driveway.

Remember how the grass at the Football Field suddenly got better this year? It wasn’t new grass. Lynch simply yelled at it and it started growing.

When revamping the gymnasium Lynch never hired a team of contractors. He was the team of contractors.

Know those giant inflatable Football Helmets NFL Teams run through before a game? Lynch has one. He runs through it every morning before going to work.

Lynch doesn’t go through the drive through; the drive-through comes to him.

McCarthy once tried to say no to The Overlord… The Overlord made McCarthy clean the Hockey Team’s pads as punishment.

Lynch never drinks anything… except Gatorade, just Orange Gatorade.

Like all those new weights in the Weight Room? Lynch carried them in with one arm.

All Lynch ever has to eat is Wheaties. You want to know why? It’s the breakfast of champions, that’s why.

The Earth shakes when Lynch laughs.

It’s said that the film, “Rudy,” was based on Lynch’s legendary College experience. That’s right, Lynch is Rudy, and Rudy was a farce.

Lynch’s alarm clock is an air-horn.

Every Friday Lynch messes around with the Gym Teachers by hiding the athletic equipment all over the school and calling it the, “Fun Fitness Friday Scavenger Hunt.”

Lynch turned into the Incredible Hulk after the Patriots lost and smashed his T.V., screaming out, “LYNCH SMASH!”

Referees don’t kick Lynch out Lynch, Lynch kicks out the referees.

Ever notice how Bill Belichick always looks like he could tear your head off? Belichick tried giving Lynch that look, and Lynch nearly tore Belichick’s head off.

So you are ever lucky enough to catch a glimpse of this legendary man, make sure you stop and take a moment to reflect upon his wicked awesomeness. Realize that this man is not simply a man. He is God.

Huckleberry Finn Censored

More than 125 years have passed since the first publication of the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by the famed writer Mark Twain. However, news has just come out over the past few weeks that there will be a new edition of the book. This edition replaces the “n-word,” which is used a total of 219 times throughout the book, with the word “slave”. In the novel the publisher NewSouth Books also changes the term “injun” to “Indian”. Changing a classic piece of literature in order to avoid possibly offending certain people  isn’t right.

There has been controversy surrounding the novel since it was first published in 1884, and has landed the novel on many schools banned lists. It is even reported that The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is one of the top five most banned books in U.S. schools.

The story takes place during the 1840’s along the Mississippi River, where racism and slavery were not only evident, but a way of life.  It describes the relationship between Huck and a runaway slave Jim as they journey together. Huck’s view on slavery changes forever when he experiences the racism and hatred that the whites use towards Jim. However, in order to fully see the racist themes involved, the novel needs to stay as is. The use of the “n-word” is used not because Twain was a racist, but rather because he was writing about a racist and faulty society.

The novel needs to be used as a tool in high school classrooms to discuss race issues and the obstacles that have been overcome since that time period. Twain was vividly depicting the realities of a racist time period in American history, and by eliminating that word it is like shunning a part of our history. Instead by altering the novel, NewSouth is ignoring the past and taking the risk of repeating its atrocities again in the future.

By changing these words the publishing company NewSouth is altering a piece of historical literature by one of the greatest American authors of all time. Twain was very particular with the words he used, like many authors are, and this was the novel that he produced.  He was part of a movement in literature where authors captured life as it was, and this tale was no exception.  Although at times it is tough to read, his intended readers were not elementary school children but rather adults.

Upperclassmen nowadays in high school are exposed to the “n-word” in music and other media, and yet suddenly we cannot tolerate it in a classic American novel.

What the publisher NewSouth is doing is censorship and it takes away from what Twain truly wanted to say with his choice of words. Countries such as Communist China have been looked down upon for the censorship of their pasts, yet suddenly we seem to be joining them in the ranks.

To be fair, there is only one publishing company releasing the new revised edition and the rest plan to continue their publication of the classic version.

Literature is one of the only things in our society that hasn’t changed over time. Our laws have changed, our culture has changed, and our economy has changed, along with many other things. Therefor we should take care of our classics such as the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and make sure the novel is the same today in 2011 as back when Twain wrote it in the 1880’s.

Do you think Huckleberry Finn should be censored?
