“Rec Ball”- A Way Of Life
Another season of recreational basketball has come and gone. Let’s take a look back on the season that was.
Team Taste Rite: With a first place finish in the league along with an undefeated regular season Taste Rite was poised for a run at the title, however, they fell in the first round to Team Keith. Team Keith showed up ready to play and Taste Rite could not get anything going “you know it’s going to be a long day when ‘Ned’ scores” said Taste Rite player Nate Finnegan.
Team Maxwell: With a second place finish in the league Team Maxwell looked for a showdown with Taste Rite in the championship, however they fell in the first round as well. Jon Kelley did not make the playoff game he was to busy riding the bench for the SK boys varsity team. Tim Blais tried to lead the team but then realized he can only play tennis. To make matters worse Tyler Ormsby was ejected. “Danny Divito is a joke of a ref” Ormsby said.
Team Minnetti: Team Minnetti is onto the Finals of Rec ball this year and looks to be the team to win it with the one and two seeds falling out of the playoff. Team Minnetti is led by two different types of players one Max Richeter who flops around on the court and accomplishes little. And Remi at only 3’4” seems to disappear at times.
Team O’Donnel: Another possibly Rec champ fell in the first round. Team O’Donnel led by Murph and Murph could not get it going in their first round game. Coach O’Donnel thinks he knew why “The Murph’s heads are too big. They can’t run for long and they look like bobble heads running up and down the court.” Along with poor rebounding Kevin Redmond failed to bring home the Bacon.
Team Keith: Hands down the worst team in the league in the regular season pulled off the shocker in the first round off the playoffs. Fresh of the golf course Anthony Lovecchio could not be stopped. The next big factor in Team Keith’s win is that Ty McDonald is 23 years old.
Team Murano: A disappointing season for Team Murano. Many factors led to this none bigger than the fact that Ronnie Miller has no clue what a travel or a carry is. This coupled with the fact that half the team tried to play AND 1 street ball led to their 2-6record. Michael Matthews who looked to lead the team from behind the arc, instead broke the backboard.
Team Fogarty: Correction Team Gamma: Gamma leads this team with 500 points 600 rebounds 400 minuets and no passes, however they reached the semifinals. According to Gama, his philosophy is “give me the ball and see what I can do with it.” Fogarty brings instant entertainment to this team and what he lacks in skills he makes up for in trash talking.
Team Mickenny : A so-so 3-5 season by Team McKinney. They where lead by senior Ben Gross and held back by senior Zack Noka. “My goal in all sports,” Noka says, “is to avoid sweating. No matter what the scoreboard says at the end of the game, if my shirt is dry I say it’s a Dubbya.”
Team Agostini: They were in the running for worst team in the league with Samuel “Spearhead” Curry at the helm but thanks to Adam Clark running at people and scaring them they where able to pick up two wins. The team was led by junior big man Matt Belke.

12/9/2010: Boys Basketball
In last nights action the boy’s basketball team lost 76-53 to the Westerly Bulldogs. Sean Healey was the top scorer for the Rebels with 16 points; also playing well for the Rebels was Rory McEntee with 12 points and Chase Almond with 8 points. Austin Cilley had 33 points for the Bulldogs and Zach Wells added 14 of his own, as they came away with the victory.
Week 7 Fantasy Football Picks
Really? Really. What a week of frustration. If I told you that Braylon Edwards would have a bigger day against the stingy Bronco’s defense than Malcom Floyd would against the Rams, I think you might have one response. Really? Really. Hakeem Nicks would lay an egg against the Detroit Lions, one of the worst defenses in the league. Really? Really. Sebastian Janikowski, a KICKER, the highest scoring player in Raiders franchise history. Really? Really.
Weeks like the last are the reason that fantasy teams who are stacked lose. Like mine. The reason that I now have a bruise the size of my fist on my forehead. Really? Really.
And with that, I present my “love” list for week 7 of the fantasy football season. As usual, just because I say I “love” one player, and leave out another, does not mean I think that you should drop a second-round pick just because I don’t “love” him this week. Good luck to all, and oh yeah, you’re welcome. Really? Really.
Players I Love for Week 7:
Kevin Kolb (QB, PHI) vs. TEN: There we go. What we saw last week was the reason that Andy Reid felt confident about trading away Donovan McNabb, after seeing Kolb start only two games. And with that, the quarterback controversy in Philly begins anew. I think that as long as Vick is hurting, Reid has got to put his trust in Kolb. And after a week like last, why not? Tennessee ranks in the top 10 against opposing quarterbacks this year, but if you look closely, against talented quarterbacks with talented receiving corps, they have been known to get burned deep, as they rank 18th in the league against opposing wideouts. This week, Jeremy Maclin has emerged as a real deep threat and will be targeted early and often by Kolb. Also, with LeSean McCoy running between the tackles and catching passes, Kolb’s attack will be coming from all over.
Roy Williams (WR, DAL) vs. NYG: With the added defenders being thrown at Miles Austin, Roy Williams has seemingly resurrected his fantasy career. With five touchdowns in the last three weeks, Williams has become Tony Romo’s go-to guy in the red-zone. This week’s match-up comes against the football Giants of New York, who rank 12th in the league against the pass. While that may seem like a poor match-up at first glance, here’s another key stat for you. Through the first 6 weeks of the season, New York has given up an average of 127.8 yards per game through the air. Think about this as well. The Giants got torched by Shaun Hill and Drew Stanton last week, and last time I checked, I knew that Tony Romo was a better quarterback than those 2 put together! Also, I think that in order for Dallas to get into a playoff picture, they MUST win this divisional game, and with defenders draped all over Miles Austin, I expect Roy Williams to be in the end zone once again this week.
Lance Moore (WR, NO) vs. CLE: I have to admit, although the Saints are one of the most pass-happy teams in the league, I would not feel safe with ANY of the Saints wide receivers right now. Drew Brees simply spreads the ball around too much. That being said, I am all over Lance Moore as a sleeper pick for this week, due to opposing Ds being so concerned about getting pressure on Brees and locking down Marques Colston, Brees’ #1 target. As we saw this past week against Tampa Bay, Moore has the tools to be a fine #2 option in most fantasy leagues, but needs to be targeted more every week in order to warrant serious consideration. That being said, I am buying him this week against the porous Cleveland defense which ranks 26th in the NFL against opposing WRs.
Aaron Hernandez (TE, NE) vs. SD: Is it Gronkowski or Hernandez as the new weapon in the Patriots passing attack? Don’t look now, but Hernandez appears to be the one who is getting the most looks. As more of a WR than a pure TE, Hernandez is a matchup nightmare for opposing defensive coordinators. He had a solid week last week against the stubborn Ravens D (4 catches for 61 yards), which ranks 3rd in the league against tight ends. He could have had an even bigger day, if not for the few “doh!” drops early on in overtime. Against the Chargers defense, which, to put it nicely, isn’t so stubborn (they rank 23rd in the league in stopping opponents’ TEs, with an average of 52 yards given up each week), Hernandez should have another good week. Add to the fact that the Chargers have given up a touchdown to a tight end every other week…and this would be a “touchdown week”. Sit back, relax, and watch the points come rolling in.
Marshawn Lynch (RB, SEA) vs. ARI: Oh Marshawn Lynch, if only you had panned out to be the full-time starter that you had been drafted to be. After a tumultuous stint with Buffalo, Lynch has now been traded to Seattle, where he looks to rebound and regroup, and maybe make something out of his career. Normally, I would try and stay away from any Seahawks players, as I believe that franchise has almost nothing going for it right now. However, look at their schedule right now. For the rest of this season, all but two teams rank in the bottom half of the league against the run. WHAT? This is fantasy gold. If you haven’t picked him up, I am screaming at you to do so…RIGHT NOW! The Seahawks didn’t trade for him to ride the pine, while some other guy carries the rock, no. They traded for Marshawn Lynch in order for them to get a (relatively) young RB who can be a featured back and get at least 85 percent of the carries. I think that Lynch is a fantasy sleeper waiting to bust out, and this week could be a great time to start. The Cardinals rank 30th in the NFL against opposing running backs, giving up an average of 183 yards and 1 touchdown a week, while the running backs themselves have averaged 21.6 fantasy points when playing Arizona. I like this match-up a lot, and so should you. Start with confidence.
Conley and Noon Aid Rebels to Third at Wrestling States
Wrestling States was a good turn out for South Kingstown this year. The team placed 3rd overall, the same place as last year.
The Rebels took two individual titles: senior Pat Conley and senior Seth Noon won the individual titles. At 140 pounds Conley defeated Cory Giblin of Cranston West for the title. The match was a close one as Conley took the title by one point 11-10. Seth Noon in the 145 pound weight class defeated Stephen Jarrell of Mt. Hope 8-4. Noon remained undefeated on the season.
Other top performances included, Junior Roberto Albino taking 4th place in the 119 pound weight class. Freshman Garrett O’Dowd placed 4th in the 152 pound weight class.
Junior Dan Duffy placed 4th in the 135 pound weight class, and junior Dan Reis took 4th place in the 171 pound weight class. Sophomore Ryan Smith placed 6th in the 189 pound weight class.

Dan Duffy placed 4th overall in the 135 pound weight class.
SKHS Rebel Swim Season Ends
SKHS Rebel Swim has had a season with multiple ups and downs. The four captains, Amanda Graham, Adam Littlefield, Caitlyn Mahoney and Dan Murray, aided the Rebel swim team to place in the Championships on Saturday, February 13. The Lady Rebels placed 10th overall and the boys placed 12th.
The weekend prior to the State Championships was the Division II meet, where swimmers competed to qualify for a spot in States. Each team was only allowed a certain number of swimmers to compete in each event, leaving more than half of the team to anxiously cheer on the selectees.
The end result left the girls’ team disappointed and the boys’ proud. The boys swim team came in 3rd place overall whereas the girls’ received 4th. Ironically, the Lady Rebels were beat out by the three teams they lost to in meets throughout the season: Narragansett, Cranston East and Westerly.
Senior Calyx Duff said, “[the season] was shorter this year than normal, but it was a good season. Everyone worked their hardest even if we ran into some problems during meets, but it was a lot of fun.”
The girls had a competitive season, leaving with five wins and three losses. The boys were able to achieve an almost undefeated season, winning four out of five meets.
Though the teams have suffered disappointment, there are many upsides to their season. At Divisions, numerous swimmers from both the boys and girls teams placed in the top three, earning medals.
Dan Murray said, “I thought with our small amount of guys on team, we accomplished a lot. Everyone worked hard to get to where we are today.”
For the Lady Rebels, Caitlyn Mahoney, Amanda Graham, Jess Graham and Liz Congdon received second place in the 200 medley relay.
In the 200 free relay, Hayley Feaster, Mahoney, and the Graham twins placed third.
Mahoney continued her winning streak, placing second in the 50 free and third in the 100 free.
Congdon also won received a lone medal, taking third in the 100 butterfly.
The boys team had just as much success as the girls.
Dan Murray received first in the 100 back and third in the 100 free, though he lucked out in one of his best events, the 500 free.
Adam Littlefield placed third in the 100 free.
Evan Spath, another SKHS senior, received third in the 50 free race and first in the 100 butterfly.
In the medley relay as well as the 200 free relay teams both received third while the 400 free relay team walked away with second.
Mahoney said, “I was really happy with our performance at states, both individually and as a team. Our 200 free relay team was able to medal. We got tenth place overall which is better than any other year that i’ve been on the team.”
The success at Divisions was soon minimized by the time the State’s arrived. Mahoney walked away with the only individual medal for the girls’ team, receiving eight place in the 50 free; the 200 free relay team also received medal, placing in eighth. Spath and Murray both received medals in the top eighth place medals as well. Spath came in fourth in the 100 fly and Murray came in eighth in the 100 backstroke.
Mahoney also said,” We were able to [get this far] with only five girls [competing at state's]!”
This upcoming weekend, on Saturday February 27, the New England Championships will be held at the University of New Hampshire.
The girls’ team will be swimming the 200 medled relay as well as the 200 free relay. Mahoney will compete in the 50 freestyle and the 100 back. Liz Congdon will compete in the 200 IM. The only boys that will be competing in the NE Championships are Murray, Spath, Littlefield, and Jeremy Swan.
Shawna James, a junior and new addition to the swim team said, “[Everything] was hard work but it was so much fun! I made lots of new friends joining the swim team, and i plan to continue next year as a senior.”
Girls Swim win again
Last Monday, January 25, the Lady Rebels won again, beating out Rodger Williams High School 56-58.
This meet was the last meet the team competed in for the season. February 6 begins divisions for both boys and girls, which determines their position and weather or not the team will advance to states.
Co-captain Amanda Graham said, ” The last meet went good and we should do alright in Divisions, placing second or third.”
Caitlin Mahoney, an important swimmer for the team who had trouble with a hand injury, was able to swim at the last meet with ease.
Both captains are looking forward to the next challenge to overcome this weekend.
Girls’ Swim Makes a Comeback

SK girls prepare to dive off the block during the 200 medley relay where each team member does 50 meters of a different stroke.
On Tuesday January 19, the Swim Lady Rebels traveled to Tollgate to tackle their next competitors.
The night started off unusually different. The opposing team first handed the Lady Rebels a signed congratulatory card, whishing for further success throughout the rest of their swim season. Followed by the thoughtful card, a Tollgate Swimmer sang the National Anthem while the whole pool stood at attention. After the unusual introduction, since the ladies usually just start the race, the girls hurried to get ready for the first race.
After a long night of placing in the top three in every race, the Lady Rebels beat out their competitors 50 points to 38. The victory was much needed after suffering a loss against Cranston East last week.
The girls’ position in the state ranking is unknown as of this week; however after their loss last week, they were bumped down to fourth in the state.
Co-Captain Caitlin Mahoney said, “Our team did really well even though we were missing quite a few girls. Everyone stepped up to the plate and swam their hardest, which is important as we head into the Championships.”
The next upcoming meet will be Monday, January 25 at the Newport Boys and Girls Club. This next meet will be the last meet before Divisions.
