Boys’ Soccer beat the Chargers 4-0

Last night the Rebels took on the Chariho Chargers, who are
responsible for one of the Rebels two losses on the season.  Last time the Rebels faced the Chargers they
suffered a 1-0 loss, since then they have yet to lose a game with 6 wins and 2
ties.

Senior defender Zach Ward said, “The team feels good about
how we have played in the last couple of games, but we have to keep it going
and take home the gold.”

Last night the Rebels continued the streak winning 4-0,
getting goals from Zach Campo, Mike Congdon, and Colin McCarty.

They started of strong and didn’t look back attacking the Chariho
defense almost at will. Congdon was the first to break through the defense,
beating Chariho keeper Hunter Hillman.

Soon after Campo followed with two goals before the end of
the first half to seal the victory for the Rebels, but the Rebels weren’t done
yet. Late in the second half Colin McCarty made it 4-0 with a long range
strike.

The Rebels are now hitting their stride with five games left
before the playoffs. They face a big test Monday when last year’s state runner-up
Shea comes to town, kickoff is set for 4 at Curtis Corner Middle School.

Rebel Volleyball Falls To Oakers

On Wednesday Night the lady Rebels volleyball team took on the Coventry Oakers in one of the biggest regular season games in recent memory.
The result however was not what the Rebels had expected. They fell in three games to the undefeated Oakers and were not close in any of the games losing 25-10, 25,14 and 25,17.

This was the second time the Rebels have met the Oakers this year and the second time they lost.

It might not be the last times the two meet as the playoffs are coming up around the corner and the two teams are number one and two in the state.
Senior Setter Cristina Belov said the team played “Horrific” the senior went on to elaborate and said “It didn’t reflect on our team but showed us what we need to work on.”
The Rebels look to regroup quickly as they will play Chariho on Wednesday night.

Rebels Fall to Hendricken


On Friday Night the Football team fell to the Hendricken Hawsk 21-20 in overtime, the loss dropped the Rebels to 0-1 in the division.
The game was played in wet conditions which limited the Rebels attack to the ground.  Rebel Senior running backs Sean Connelly and Nick Neill took the majority of the carries. Connelly lead the way with three touchdowns.

With the game tied at 14-14 at the end of four quarters the game went to overtime where the Rebels scored first but failed to complete the extra point.

Hendricken then took the ball and scored and completed the kick sending the Rebels off their home field with the loss.

Although the Rebels failed to come away with the win, they still felt satisfied with the game.

Senior Captain Nick Neill said, “I thought we played well.”

Co- Captain Ryan Smith added, “ If we play them again we will win.”

The Rebels have a short turnaround as they will play state title contender La Salle on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 pm at Cranston Stadium.

Boys’ Soccer vs Cumberland

smallerLast night, the South Kingstown High School boys’ soccer team defeated the Cumberland Clippers, 3-1. Norman Kalen, Tim Puterio and Taylor Keith scored goals for the Rebels. The win improved the Rebels to 4-2 on the season.

The win for the Rebels makes it their second consecutive win, and they will look to make it three in a row on Thursday night when they travel to Central Falls for a 6:00 p.m. kickoff.

After the game the Rebels were excited about the win. “It was definitely a step in the right direction,” said senior midfielder Rob Lavallee.

The Rebels got even better news on Monday night with the information that senior captain Zach Campo had passed his concussion test and will rejoin the team Thursday night at Central Falls.

Rebels Golf Looks Good At States

  On May 31 one hundred and twenty of the states best golfers teed it up at Cranston Country Club.

                The Rebels who failed to qualify as a whole team when they lost there division playoff by three to Westerly where still proudly represented.

                Five out of the six starters for South Kingstown where at Cranston on May 31 the most out of any team that was not in the team competition.

                The Rebels fared well in the championship with two out of there five players making the 81 cut line. Sophomore McKinley Slade did that by shooting a 79 and Senior Anthony Lovechio by shooting a nine over 80.

                Slade in only his second appearance at states shot even better in the next round firing a five over 76 to take sixth place in the state, and with the five players in front of him being seniors, Slade looks to be the favorite to win it all next year.

SK’s Barlow named Gatorade R.I. baseball player of the year

CHICAGO — South Kingstown’s Harrison Barlow was named the 2010-11 Gatorade Rhode Island Baseball Player of the Year on Wednesday.

Barlow is the first player of the year to be chosen from South Kingstown.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Barlow as Rhode Island’s best high school baseball player.

The 6-foot-1,165-pound senior shortstop batted .479 with 36 runs scored, 20 stolen bases, 14 RBI and seven doubles this past season while leading the Rebels (16-8) to a berth in the Division I state tournament.

A returning First Team All-State selection, Barlow produced a .630 slugging percentage and a .578 on-base percentage. Also a pitcher, Barlow posted a 1.77 ERA and 15 strikeouts against just one walk in 17.1 innings.

The two-time Division I-South Player of the Year, he finished with a .500 batting average at the plate as a junior in addition to a 1.99 ERA over 25 innings on the mound.

Barlow has maintained a 3.44 GPA in the classroom. In addition to donating his time as a youth baseball instructor, he has volunteered as part of the Vacation Bible School on behalf of his church community.

Barlow was also presented the Eileen Cullen Hughes Award by the RI High School Baseball Umpires Association. The award is for the player who has gone above and beyond the sport to promote baseball.

“He’s a great ballplayer,” said South Kingstown head coach James Sauro. “He’s by far the best shortstop and one of the best pitchers in the state. For two years, he’s been the Most Outstanding Player in the league, and three of the final four teams remaining are from Division I-South. Harrison’s a stud. We only had one captain this year, and it was him. Whenever things went wrong, he kept guys on task. He’s a great leader.”

Barlow will attend the University of Rhode Island this fall.

South Kingstown Boys’ Tennis Halted by the Rain

  It’s this time of the year that makes or breaks a team’s season. As the regular season comes to an end, teams position themselves for the playoff run. This week was supposed to be the biggest week for South Kingstown boys’ tennis, until it rained.

   On Tuesday the boys’ team was scheduled for a rematch against undefeated Barrington. It was the Providence Journals high school game time match of the week. 13-1 South Kingstown versus 14-0 Barrington who had handed the rebels their only loss.  As Tuesday developed, weather caused confusion to the possibility of playing.

 

Mr. Lynch decided it was worth a shot. Barrington came down to South Kingstown and as they headed closer to the courts, rain fell from the sky, making them slippery and dangerous to play.  On Thursday, senior night was scheduled for the tennis team against Hendricken. As the teams were warming up, rain fell from the sky crashing the senior night party.  Senior Night is rescheduled for Tuesday at 3:30 at Broad Rock Middle School. 

“We can’t control the weather,” said head coach Andy Carr.   

Senior Ross Bouchard added,“It’s disappointing the rain ruined our week.  As a team we were ready and focused and now we just have to wait a little longer unfortunately.”

   The matches have been rescheduled for next week.  Monday the boys’ tennis team will play their rival Barrington at 3:30 on the Broad Rock Middle School tennis courts. The match is surely going to be exciting as these two teams always put on a great match. With first place on the line, Barrington and SK are ready for a battle.
